Shire’s General Manager, Joe Vescio, Mayor John Cahill and Council’s Manager of Operations, Gary Shakespeare took the Minister on a brief tour of the flood damaged local area, including the box culvert on William Street over Myack Creek (which partially collapsed during the previous weekend) and Coolamatong Road which is a typical example of how the recent floods have devastated our rural roads, with several sections literary washed away and in need of total reconstruction.  READ MORE

Snowy Mountains Readers’ and Writers’ Festival - a Valuable Cultural Addition
Snowy Mountains Readers’ and Writers’ Festival - a Valuable Cultural Addition
Jindabyne hosted the inaugural Snowy Mountains Readers’ and Writers’ Festival this Easter as part of the National Year of Reading; a truly memorable event, the festival featured seventeen published Australian authors including Snowy Mountains writers Sandy McKinnon, Jane Carroll, Sulari Gentill and Michael Keenan. This well attended Festival - which will no doubt carry on for many years to come - also brought some of the highest profile writers in the country such as internationally celebrated identities, John Marsden, George Negus and Adrian d’Hagé. Over one hundred fifty aspiring word smiths came to attend John Marsden’s creative writing workshop, aimed at literary students of all ages and predispositions. John, who has written over forty books and sold more than five million copies, gave some invaluable advice regarding the importance of establishing (and changing) the social status of characters within a storyline and said that it was always essential to give the readers what they wanted.  READ MORE

Berridale Fire Shed Officially Opened
Berridale Fire Shed Officially Opened
Saturday 14th April, the Berridale Bush Fire Brigade hosted the opening of the new Berridale Brigade Station. RFS Learning and Development Officer Mick Holton said that the brigade had basically outgrown their old shed and the $130,000 it cost to build a new one is ‘a drop in the ocean’ compared with lives and property the volunteers have protected over the last seventy-two years. “It’s a small token of our appreciation that they get a nice new shed to work in”, Mick said. “It’s an essential part of the fire fighting operations for this area although without the volunteers, this shed is just a shed; with the volunteers, it’s a real fire station”. The Berridale brigade also responds to fires in the township itself and the new shed represents a higher level of health and safety for volunteers and is physically attached to the Fire Control Centre, providing increased amenity.  READ MORE

Tana Recognised on ANZAC Day for Saving Aussie Lives
ANZAC Day services for 2012 were well attended throughout the Snowy Mountains. During the morning service held in Banjo Paterson Park, Jindabyne, retired Royal Australian Navy Lieutenant Commander, Paul ‘Tanzi’ Lea reminded us of the great significance to Australia of the ANZAC tradition saying that during the First World War, over 400,000 Australian men volunteered to fight out of a population of just five million and 59,000 of those gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today, along with 152,000 soldiers who were injured. In Gallipoli, 8,000 Australians were killed and 19,000 wounded. “These numbers alone highlight the great sacrifice that Australian men made so that we can enjoy our lives today”, Tanzi said.  READ MORE

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor, I would like to pose the question to our esteemed Federal Government as to how they are going to assist self- funded retirees with regards to the Carbon Tax. Pensioners of many persuasions are having their payments increased; lower income families will be receiving taxation relief. Self-funded retirees have been severely beaten up by the Global Financial Crisis (my pension fund has been reduced by over twenty per cent) and now, we are being beaten up by our own Commonwealth Government with a Carbon Tax which is said, will only apply to big businesses.  READ MORE

Renewable Energy Under Fire Mr Constance, you are opposed to a carbon tax. The NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher has said the O’Farrell government will no longer be supporting green schemes that require a subsidy. He is also calling for the closure of the federal government's renewable energy target. Solar in NSW has been stopped dead in its tracks. The draft wind guidelines seem designed to handicap the expansion of the wind industry. Renewable energy is under attack!  READ MORE
